ACL Injuries
ACL injuries involve tearing of the ligament that stabilises the knee. These injuries commonly occur during sports that involve sudden stops, changes in direction, or jumping and are prevalent among athletes.
Signs of an ACL tear include a loud pop at the time of injury, followed by knee pain, swelling, and instability. The knee may also feel like it’s giving way during movement
Living with an ACL injury can make it difficult to perform activities that require knee stability, such as running, jumping, or pivoting. This may lead to a fear of re-injury and limit participation in sports and active hobbies.
Dr. Khoo will diagnose an ACL injury through a physical examination and may use an MRI to confirm the tear and assess damage to other knee structures.
Surgery, such as ACL reconstruction, may be necessary for complete tears, especially in active individuals or athletes who wish to return to high-impact sports. Dr. Khoo will discuss the best approach based on your goals and activity level.
If surgery is recommended, Dr. Khoo will explain the ACL reconstruction procedure and how it can restore knee stability and function. He will guide you through the surgical process, recovery expectations, and provide detailed information on rehabilitation to help you return to your desired activity level safely.
Dr. Khoo will assess the severity of your ACL injury and discuss your activity goals. He will provide a comprehensive overview of the condition and treatment options, including non-surgical and surgical methods, to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your lifestyle and expectations.
Partial ACL tears may heal with non-surgical treatment such as physiotherapy and bracing. However, complete tears usually require surgery for individuals who want to return to sports or activities that require knee stability.
Recovery typically takes about 6–9 months, depending on adherence to a structured rehabilitation program. Returning to high-impact sports may take longer, sometimes up to a year.
Most people can return to sports after ACL reconstruction. However, the timing depends on the success of rehabilitation and regaining knee strength and stability. It's essential to follow your rehabilitation program closely to ensure a safe return to sports.
